How do I know if I have a new construction or a remodel can light?
New construction can lights are installed in the home when it was first built and will be attached to the frame of the house with bar hangers. Remodel can lights are installed in remodel applications where there is no/or limited access in the ceiling and is only attached to the drywall itself.
Remove the can light trim. New construction can lights will have a rough opening in the ceiling next to the outside edge of the can allowing you to see where the drywall was cut. Remodel can lights will have a lip that is flush up against the ceiling not allowing you to see this ruff cut but giving the ceiling and can a smooth finished look.
