Convert Recessed Light to Track Light: Track Type Options
Track standard, or type of track
When preparing to convert recessed light to track, you’ll want to consider the type of track you will use. The track is the part of the track light that is attached to the ceiling or wall and is the part that the track lights are installed onto. The four main types are standard track, fixed track, swing arm track, and monorail track. The one you use to convert recessed light to track light will depend on your specific needs. There are many track standards/types including Halo, Juno and Lightolier, which are wired in different ways. Not all track lights fit all track types so be sure the lights and track are compatible before you convert a can light to a track light.
Convert Recessed Light to Track Light: Power Source Options
Another important part of any project to convert recessed light to track light is the power source for your new fixture.
1- Plug in track light
Some track lighting systems have a cord to simply plug into an existing outlet which requires no electrical wiring. If you plan to convert recessed light to a track plug-in system, remember it will need to be placed near an outlet.
2- Electrical junction box track light
This track light system offers a more professional, or designer look with no exposed wiring, but requires electrical connections be made at a junction box to install.
Convert Recessed Light to Track Light: Voltage Options
When selecting a fixture to convert recessed light to track light, you’ll notice there are two voltage systems available. While they basically function the same way, they differ in cost, ease of installation, quality of light, and energy efficiency. If you convert can light to track light, you’ll want to weigh the pros and cons of each. You may decide the higher initial cost of a low-voltage system is worth it when you convert recessed light to track in your kitchen as you will use the lights quite frequently and want to provide a nice bright light. For a room you use less often, such as a guest bath, opting for line-voltage system to convert can light to track light might make more sense. Read below to learn more.
Line-voltage track lights
Line-voltage track lights work with the standard voltage found in electric junction boxes and outlets (120V). For projects to convert recessed light to track, line-voltage track lights are generally less expensive, but they consume more power than low-voltage track lights. Line-voltage track light fixtures do not require a transformer, making the base which connects to the track a lot smaller. However, when you convert can light to track light, keep in mind that the track light heads are larger in size compared to low-voltage track lights. Because they do not use a transformer, line-voltage track heads use a different set of lamps or light bulbs than low-voltage fixtures.
Low-voltage track lights
Many people who convert recessed light to track, will opt for low-voltage track lights. These lights generally cost more but produce whiter light and consume less power. Low-voltage track lights operate at 12V and each comes with an integral transformer to convert the 120V line-voltage to 12V. Those who choose a low-voltage system to convert can light to track light, will appreciate that the heads can be smaller while still putting out a comparable amount of lumens to larger line-voltage heads.
